Life at low Reynolds Number Re-visited: The apparent activation energy of viscous flow in sea water

چکیده

In a 1976 lecture entitled “Life at low Reynolds Number,” Edward Purcell examined constraints on mobility of small aquatic animals defining the energetic challenge as “to move far enough to beat diffusion.” We show that essential requirement is need do sufficient work overcome activation energy viscous flow. Raman spectroscopy shows sea water dominated (78–85%) by hydrogen bonded forms, primarily large (H2O)5 tetrahedral pentamer form. Two bonds must be broken disrupt this structure. The strength bond in ~8.4 kJ/mol and experimentally determined flow (~16.7 kJ/mol) approximately equal required break two water. For occur molecular vacancy form for flowing molecule into; smaller needed less required. heat created animal swimming breaks thus forming layer non-hydrogen H2O molecules around animal. These “lubricate” surface yielding more efficient decreases with pressure most likely due weaker under – lab field data support observation. dissipation tidal heat, often attributed “intermolecular forces,” directly related breaking bonds.

Viscous Flow at High Reynolds Numbers

Let us first give a heuristic estimates of boundary layer in steady flows. Consider a particle near the wall to be influenced by viscosity. After traveling a distance x from the edge, it has been under viscous influence for a time of t = x/U . Let U be large. For finite x, t is small so that vorticity is spread sideways to the width (νt) ∼ (νx/U). Let us define this width to be the boundary lay...

Low-Reynolds-number swimming in viscous two-phase fluids.

The fluid media surrounding many microorganisms are often mixtures of multiple materials with very different physical properties. The composition and rheology of the mixture may strongly affect the related locomotive behaviors. We study the classical Taylor's swimming sheet problem within a two-fluid model, which consists of two intermixed viscous fluids with different viscosities, with both nu...

Micromixer based on viscoelastic flow instability at low Reynolds number.

We exploited the viscoelasticity of biocompatible dilute polymeric solutions, namely, dilute poly(ethylene oxide) solutions, to significantly enhance mixing in microfluidic devices at a very small Reynolds number, i.e., Re approximately 0.023, but large Peclet and elasticity numbers. With an abrupt contraction microgeometry (8:1 contraction ratio), two different dilute poly(ethylene oxide) solu...
